The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) was set up in 1959 when Singapore attained self-government. Housed at the Empress Place Building, it remained there until 1963 when Singapore joined the Federation of Malaysia and internal security became a federal responsibility.
After Singapore became independent in 1965, Home Affairs returned to its Empress Place address as part of the Ministry of Interior and Defence (MID). MID stayed there for several months before it was re-located to Pearl's Hill (former Upper Barracks of Police).
In August 1970, Home Affairs and Defence became separate Ministries. MHA remained at Pearl's Hill until August 1977 when it moved into its previous home at the Phoenix Park in Tanglin Road.
MHA, together with Police Headquarters, moved to the New Phoenix Park at 28 Irrawaddy Road on 18 August 2001.
MHA has retained and brought "Phoenix" over to its new home in Irrawaddy Road. The "Phoenix" was the emblem chosen by Lord Louis Mountbatten on his appointment as the Supreme Allied Commander of the South East Asia Command during World War II. He was responsible for the defence of India and for driving the Japanese from Singapore, Burma, Malaya and Dutch Indies.
Lord Mountbatten was also General Bill Slim's immediate boss. General Slim was the Commander of the 14th Army which defeated the Japanese in Burma in 1944/5. "Irrawaddy" was the river the 14th Army had to cross in its operations in Burma to defeat the Japanese. Lord Mountbatten regularly flew to Burma to visit Slim as the Burma front was the main area of operations in South East Asia Command.
